Gold Metal is the latest project from Scott Matelic and Jay McElfresh. Indiana natives who now reside in Brooklyn, the duo first collaborated in the hip hop group A-Grav Lab in the late 1990s.
Matelic went on to create his hip hop instrumental magnum opus, Primitive Pessimist, released on Japanese Label Tri-Eight music in 2002. He also became a staple in the Indianapolis DJ scene while continuing to crank out classic hip hop material; working on an as yet untitled psychadelic soul influenced hip hop album, and collaborating with Sage Francis and Sole (Anticon) among others. During this time McElfresh moved to Austin, TX with his electro-punk-disco outfit Awesome Cool Dudes. The group found quick success, touring both coasts, playing SXSW 6 years in a row, and releasing it’s third full-length on Furniture Records. McElfresh kept one foot in the hip hop game having his self-titled hip hop instrumental project released on Chuck D’s (Public Enemy) online label Slam Jamz.
In the late 2000s the duo began work on a sound that was the creative culmination of their previous musical paths. Incorporating more live instrumentation than samples, the sound not only drew upon their hip hop background, but was equally influenced by rock, soul, folk, electro, and new wave. After a two year hiatus which included separate moves to Brooklyn, NY, they put the finishing touches on their first release as Gold Metal, Drop Out City.
